Marvel's New Midnight Saga

Hype can be a double-edged sword. On one end, it can spark interest and direct others to try something that, usually, they might skip. On the other, it can lose control of the narrative and find itself failing before it even releases to the masses.
Marvel's new "Alternate" timeline story arc drops this month, and I know that if you find yourself reading this, you've heard all the boasting about the next big thing coming from Marvel. It's been openly compared to the seemingly unchallenged fervor surrounding DC Comics' Absolute Universe.
Hype, speculation, and blind comparison have always been part of the makeup of a great storyline and release. I appreciate the positive banter and creative ideas where the sky's the limit.
That said, I do wish we could appreciate a concept for the thing it is. Midnight, though boasted as the next Absolute, comes off more as a competitive comparison to DC vs. Vampires. More importantly, that's not a bad thing! The tone is darker, the violence is ramped up, and the consequences are significant enough to be thrilling.
So, is it anything like DC's Absolute Universe? Not really.
But it is a leap of faith against editorial, allowing the creative teams to push the bounds of their heroes. In my opinion, a perfect pairing to the darker evenings and festivities of October.
