Chainkata #1
(W/A/CA) Daniel Warren Johnson
Good action comics aren't exactly hard to write or draw. In fact, they are arguably the backbone of our ongoing medium. But making an action comic great, or even brilliant? Well, that's an area reserved for the elite. And for me personally, Daniel Warren Johnson has quickly become the standard.
Daniel Warren Johnson is a superstar now. It feels like forever ago that I was first introduced to his work through Murder Falcon and Extremity. His artwork is the peak of action-in-action. Even with the stillness of comic book art, his sketches somehow feel like they're moving. Every panel makes your brain complete the motion, or even predict the incredible maneuvering that comes next. It's a special kind of talent, and few do it better.
This month, Daniel is back with a new story called Chainkata. Like most of his work, this one is heavy on action and reaches for the stars in all the best ways. Chainkata is an ultimate weapon. Or maybe it's just a chainsaw/katana wielded by an ultimate warrior. You'll have to read it to find out. This sci-fi epic spans a violent cosmos, narrated by a survivor who's only looking for a moment's peace.
This particular book is pitched toward those who enjoy Princess Mononoke or Warhammer 40K. And in my humble opinion? If you've ever dabbled in action, sci-fi, or fantasy, this comic is absolutely worth a try.
Pick up the first issue and let me know if you can put it down without a smile on your face. I know what I'm expecting from Daniel Warren Johnson at this point, and somehow, he still finds a way to make me excited for more.
