Die Loaded #1
(W) Kieron Gillen (A/CA) Stephanie Hans
Back in December 2018, I took a chance on an independent comic about Dungeons & Dragons called DIE — a dark fantasy adventure that promised the thrilling imagination of Jumanji mixed with the childhood trauma and high-stakes horror of IT.
It was written by the same brilliant mind who gave us what I still consider to be the best comic book version of Darth Vader of all time.
The story follows a group of friends who play a custom D&D-style game called DIE—only to be transported into a dark, living version of the fantasy world they created. After disappearing for two years, they return forever changed. Twenty-five years later, a mysterious gift pulls them back in to finish what they started.
From the moment I opened that first issue, I was captivated. The artwork—with its soft brushwork and rich, layered colors—was absolutely breathtaking. And as the story unfolded, the writing and character reunions kept me turning page after page. Beneath the fantasy and danger, it explored real-world struggles: aging, identity, responsibility, loss, and acceptance.
To say I love the world of DIE would be an understatement.
That’s why I’m thrilled to announce that this November, we’re returning to that world!
The new series, DIE: LOADED, picks up a year after the group’s return to reality. Just as they begin to settle into normal life… the game has other plans.
If you enjoy board games, fantasy, drama, or horror, this “Goth Jumanji” masterpiece was made for you.
Roll for initiative — and join me back in the world of DIE this month!
