In 1984, the world was introduced to a fantastic and truly unique idea in comics. The legendary Larry Hama, working on G.I. Joe: Real American Hero at the time, decided he wanted to try something bold - write a complete comic book with no dialogue. As he put it, “I wanted to see if I could do a story that was a real, complete story - beginning, middle, end, conflict, characterization, action, solid resolution - without balloons or captions or sound effects.”

He pulled it off with what’s now the iconic G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #21. That issue didn’t just stand out - it shifted the medium, proving there was another powerful way to tell stories that only comics could truly deliver.

One of the best parts of being a comic book reader is discovering stories that simply can’t be replicated. When the art, the tone, and the physical page itself are the storytelling - that’s when comics hit differently.

This month, Image Comics and G.I. Joe return to that silent storytelling approach, bringing us five wordless missions told through the lens of COBRA. These one-shot stories will drop weekly throughout April, each spotlighting a different member of the snake-themed villains. The goal? A complete, fully realized story told entirely through art.

Kicking things off on April 1st is the commanding presence of Baroness.

Don’t miss these issues - they’re a perfect reminder of why we fell in love with comics in the first place. Let the art guide you, sink into the vision of the creative team, and experience something only comics can truly offer.
